The Clean Up Green Up Campaign

In Los Angeles there is a new campaign known as "Clean Up Green Up". According to their site -

The Clean Up Green Up campaign aims to transform Los Angeles communities most impacted by industrial pollution into vibrant and healthy places for families to live. Specifically, the campaign proposes to create “green zones” in the City of Los Angeles that will:

  • Protect public health by using planning tools to mitigate pollution in these heavily impacted communities
  • Invest in economic development with financial and planning incentives to retain jobs and create new, green enterprises
  • Reduce existing environmental hazards through streamlined inspection and enforcement; and
  •
  • Expand public-private partnerships to leverage outside resources
  • The Clean Up Green Up campaign is sponsored by the following grassroots organizations, and is supported by organizations and individuals throughout the Los Angeles region, who recognize that only when you begin to address the problems where they are the worst, can you improve conditions for all Angelenos.

An interesting article about the campaign has been written up in the article "How Clean is The Air We Breathe" over at EagleRockPatch. The article references the origination of the campaign draws upon the findings of community members who conducted "ground truthings" of pollution sources in Boyle Heights, the Fugueroa Corridor, Wilmington, Pacoima, Commerce and Maywood.  The findings are contained in the attached report.
